Fromental {On The Wall}

Last week I stopped by the George Cameron Nash Showroom in the Dallas Design District and instantly became obsessed with the large gorgeous panels of Fromental wallpaper!  I have been hunting for an affordable version of these gorgeous papers for a new project  lately but there is nothing with this degree of handwork.  Fromental is all about made by hand, not hand screened, but hand painted, hand embroidered, and on silk and then backed with paper and most of the time with Asian influences or modern marbeling.
Here are a few of my favorite designs….Now I just need to win the lottery or pick up a client wiling to invest in these gorgeous pieces of art!

They are so custom that that the patterns are not sold by the single or double roll but by the size of the walls and that this “art” and should not be “slapped up” by any random installer,  but MUST be gracefully applied to the walls by artisans and craftsmen who consider every detail.

It is owned by the former creative director of de Gournay and his wife.  They have taken historical motifs and updated them with brightness and wit, blending British classicism with London’s fashion scene. I love the chic and hip take on the classic looks and can see them appealing to the younger homeowner that love to mix new and old without looking frumpy.

Flat Weaves That Don’t Fall Flat

When The Rug Company opened up it’s Dallas showroom in 2011 I quickly became smitten with their gorgeous collection of heirloom quality rugs, especially the pieces by fabulous designers like Kelly Wearstler, Dian Von Furstenburg, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Alexander McQueen to name a few.  Prices point range from high dollar to super affordable and everything in between depending on the construction of the rug.

I thought it would be fun to get a little more insight on flat weave rugs from one of my local showroom reps here in Dallas! I  am often asked about flat weave rugs by most of my clients. They are everywhere now and with all of the gorgeous colors and graphic patterns, it’s hard not to take notice.  So I went directly to my showroom rep, Oscar for the real scoop on these fab little rugs and here is what he had to say….

Taking in the colorful showroom at The Rug Company designer brunch

Abbe-Is there anything important I should know about flat rugs before I plunge into the great unknown and purchase one?

Oscar-A flat weave is exactly what it is. A flat rug with not much cushion for the feet. It’s a different feel, a  more relaxed look.

Abbe - How are these rugs cleaned? Should I consider special cleaning or are they easy to spot clean?

Oscar – Depending on the material, they can be taken to a professional rug cleaner or can be washed at home if you have an industrial sized washer and hung to dry. Most are cotton, talk to your salesperson about the cleaning instructions. Not all rugs are created equal! If you are purchasing from a known retailer, check the cleaning instructions carefully.

Abbe-What kind of rug pad should I use? Can I make the rug feel more cushy under foot?Oscar -Many rugs pads are available. Different height for cushion, sticky ones that stick to your floor and rug to help with rug movement. Since they do not naturally provide lots of cushion, they are great options for dining rooms, bathrooms and entry spaces. If you don’t mind a rug without any pile, they look great in main family rooms too.

Abbe-Can I install a flat weave rug over carpet and then put furniture on top with out it puckering under the legs of the furniture?

Oscar – You can always be creative with this one… adding additional support for the furniture legs under the flat rug can even out the puckering.

Abbe -Is it a good plan to get a flat woven rug for spring through fall, and to switch to a regular thick wool (or shag) rug during the cold months?

Oscar- It really depends on what your needs are or if you just want a different look for the Fall.

Abbe -If my clients have kids, a husband, and a few puppy dogs. Would thick wool rugs be better for that busy family? I don’t want to buy anything that is delicate for them. I also don’t want to use an indoor/outdoor rug or one made from jute or sisal.

Oscar- I would suggest buying a rug that is well made and cleans up easily. A rug rich in lanolin would be best. The lanolin repeals water and dirt so the richer in the lanolin the easier to maintain the rug. A hand knotted rug can last for many generations.

For more affordable flat weave and hand knotted options…check out the entire Studio Collection! Jonathan Adler recently launched a fabulous collection of rugs here…and don’t forget the pillows! Or as they call them, cushions!

Yesterday I stopped by the new Ornare showroom in the Dallas Design District to take a peek at their collection of closets, kitchens, baths, home and office pieces. Ornare hails from Brazil, where the brand is highly revered for its well designed and quality products with tons of gorgeous details to choose from. Here is a little look at the new showroom and a few of my favorites.

From the moment you walk into the showroom, you are greeted by the fabulous sleek and modern kitchen. I immediately became obsess with the wood plank wall and oversized butcher block cutting board across the front island. Need storage? My goodness, there are options that make moving around the kitchen super easy and help to keep you organized.

Maybe you are thinking about updating your bathrooms. I am so obsessed with the Manhattan line…I mean obsessed!  The black lacquered beauty in the Dallas showroom is a show stopper and on my “to-do” list for my next dream house. Customizable finish, countertop and mirrors help to create a look that screams penthouse!

Details always pull everything together and this showroom is a detail candy land for sure. Mother of pearl, bone, top stitched leather, suede lining, monogramed door pulls and the list goes on and on. These elements give Ornare it’s high style and exquisite design that is sure to sweep Dallas of their feet! It is a MUST SEE if you are in the Dallas Design District and if you are in the market for a start to finish custom kitchen, closet, entertainment are or bathroom.

Top stitched croc leather panels with valet

One of my favorites, the oversized pull for closet doors.

Monogramed door pulls…so fancy!

The vanity legs were even detailed, such a sophisticated touch.

Individual metal pieces make up this built-in trivet to protect the solid surface countertop.

And who doesn’t love a full length mirror next to a full length hat rack??

Spotted On My Soap Opera

Yes, I watch a Soap Opera….and Yes…I really am posting about it today.   The Young & The Restless has been part of my dvr scheduled recordings since that was available and before that, I used my my VCR to record the show everyday. I would like to blame my mother for getting me hooked on this show. Back in the 80′s I would come home from school and sit down to do my homework at our kitchen table. My mother would turn on the Young & The Restless and it became part of my afternoon each day from that point on.

As an interior designer, I am always noticing details on my favorite T.V. shows, but my soap has always been pretty bad. I mean seriously, these people are supposto be wealthy and sophisticated but their homes have always been awful! I will spare you the icky images!

But, this year The Young and The Restless has kicked it up a bit, probably because they are celebrating 40 years on the air. The dapper Martyn Lawrence Bullard stopped by to help Sharon  update The Ranch Mansion…too bad she was divorced soon after and kicked out before he was able to work his magic…UGH!!! I was really hoping to see him “million dollar decorator” up that house!! This was the second time that MLB came in to help Sharon, he was also asked to update another mansion…from another marriage that she had…shocker!

And if that wasn’t exciting enough….Billy & Victoria recently painted their living room and updated their furniture. I was excited when I noticed Duralee’s Aqua print from their Westbury Collection! I have been working on a Lake House project and we are using this fabric on a few accent pillows too!  So, I had to snap a pic and share it with you guys!

Here is a peek of the fabric from our Lake House project! Soothing colors and modern graphics, looks like Y&R is stepping it up and I can’t wait to see what else they decide to update on the set!

Something New To Talk About

Tomorrow is the big day for Dallas’ latest furniture showroom opening! Adriana Hoyos is the latest addition to the Dallas Design District and tomorrow they finally open their doors.  I have been working with their showroom manager, Baron Farah on the new DTV set and have fallen in love with their pieces…and Baron isn’t so bad either! Boys knows his stuff and is a blast to work with!

Don’t let their location in the Design District run you off, they are also open to the public!  I love that they even have an in stock and ready to ship program so if you are looking for a killer sofa, dining table or something new for your bedroom you can snag it now! Although they call their pieces “high end”, their prices are affordable and their finish options are GORGEOUS!!!! I have my eye on a few pieces…

We used the Coco rectangular coffee table in Mink, two of the Chocolate end tables in Champagne and the Carmelo Console table in Mink on The DTV set.  We love the pieces so much that we went back for the Cafe Sofa in a white lacquer to use in the opening for D The Broadcast!

My Bucket List {A Chic Mountain Home}

One of my favorite vacation spots is the  snow covered mountains in Colorado. I’m not a huge fan of skiing (I’m actually horrible at it) or being cold;  but I love the simplicity of the small towns, watching the snow fall and of course the gorgeous interiors. I try to grab a few of the local real estate and design magazines and bring them back to the hotel.  I love poring over them and taking in all of the rustic details, wide open windows and of course seeing the views that each home boasts.  Views sell in the mountains for sure and I love seeing how they bring the outside in to many of the stunning homes.

We were not able to visit the Colorado mountains this winter, but we definitely going to plan a trip to visit this summer!  Here are a few of my favorite Colorado spaces. I personally prefer more of the modern rustic feel with updated appliances and sleek lines while still staying true to the mountain environment!  So for now, my stacks of magazines will have to wait until we can check this one off the bucket list!  Here are a few of my favorite inspiration images. Who knows, maybe someday soon we can put them to use!
