Puppy Paintings

I recently had the opportunity to work with Dallas pet portrait artist Melissa Smith for a custom portrait of Caddo & Ivy. When we began to work together on a portrait of Caddo & Ivy I knew that I wanted them sitting pretty on my favorite piece in our home. Our ivory croc velvet sofa is one of the first things you see when you walk into our home and the girls are not allows on it. I had a hard time getting them to pose but once we finally got the shot, Melissa began to do her thing! She perfectly captured the quirky little head tilt and funny facial expression of my puppy dogs.

My favorite part of the process was when she would send update images! It’s fun to see how the piece transforms and how she creates the details that make each puppy dog look like themselves.  Her BLOG is a must, I love seeing each piece transform. She captured every detail and a few of my favorite details are the feathering on Caddo and of course Ivy’s “what” face.  My FAVORITE part…knowing that 10% of the cost of this piece goes to support the non-proffit pet rescue of my choice, what a wonderful thing!  Having a custom piece of the girls in our home is something I will always cherish. Even when we our lives take us to new homes and when things began to change, I will always have this fabulous piece! There will be nothing better than my fur babies sitting on my favorite sofa!

Color Crush {Coral & Turquoise}

We recently finished pulling this fabulous Dallas 30′s Bungalow together and have been swooning over the photo shoot  images from Melanie Johnson!  The multiple shades of turquoise and coral kept the home sophisticated while the fun art and accessories brought in tons of texture and ramped up the chic factor.  So in honor of our latest project obsession, we wanted to share a few of our favorite pieces.  I am in LOVE with the turquoise Diana necklace from Brighthouse Baubles & as a matter of fact I rocked my yesterday (THANK YOU AMY!!). I can imagine my client lounging around in her new home  in a billowy white dress, the Diana necklace around her neck and of course lounging on her new Kaori pillow!  Although I’m pretty sure she is curled up on her new sofa with her hubby and puppy dog…I secretly dream that each of my client’s dress for their home!

One Piece Two Ways {Climbing Leopard}

The latest edition of Modern Luxury Texas Interiors Magazine is out on news stands. I’m excited that they asked me how I would spruce up my space for summer if money was no object. I have been obsessed with Diane Von Furstenberg’s Climbing Leopard Rug from The Rug Company for a while…now I just need that money tree to pop up in our back yard!!  So in honor of this gorgeous rug, I thought it would be fun to pull together two looks to compliment the rug. A masucline feel that is sophisticated, modern and sleek and a fun feminine look with bold pops of color and playful pieces.

Weekend Window {Citrus Splash }

Summer time  is in full swing down here in Dallas! The long, hot and muggy days are not going away anytime soon and the “cold fronts” are laughable at times. So today’s Weekend Window will hopefully inspire you to mix a cold drink on a chic shaded patio. Or, maybe you will be inspired to brighten up your own patio!

Get The Look {Library Inspired}

I love this library from the 41st Annual Cathedral Antique Show in 2012. It was designed by  Lindsey Coral Harper from Lindsey Coral Harper Interiors . Her jumping-off point for the room was the Eskayel Madagascar rug from Doris Leslie Blau!  The Madagascar rug is made from Banana Silk! So if a silk rug is out of your price point, a rug made from Banana Silk will give you that gorgeous silk sheen without breaking the bank.  The banana leaf fibers are mixed synthetic fibers that help to accentuate the detail of the design. You can see more pieces made from Banana Silk HERE.

Now on to this gorgeous library…Lindsey was going for a rich, jewel-toned room, glossy from floor to ceiling. And how about that gorgeous deep plum pink paint color that she pulled from the carpet?  The color is Mulberry by Benjamin Moore and since the rug had other rich colors and a lot of platinum, she used black and white to balance it.  Of course this gorgeous room was perfect for our GET THE LOOK series and with a rug as gorgeous as this, we had to pull it all together!

Head on over to Mari’s Blog to see more gorgeous illustrations!!

Fromental {On The Wall}

Last week I stopped by the George Cameron Nash Showroom in the Dallas Design District and instantly became obsessed with the large gorgeous panels of Fromental wallpaper!  I have been hunting for an affordable version of these gorgeous papers for a new project  lately but there is nothing with this degree of handwork.  Fromental is all about made by hand, not hand screened, but hand painted, hand embroidered, and on silk and then backed with paper and most of the time with Asian influences or modern marbeling.
Here are a few of my favorite designs….Now I just need to win the lottery or pick up a client wiling to invest in these gorgeous pieces of art!

They are so custom that that the patterns are not sold by the single or double roll but by the size of the walls and that this “art” and should not be “slapped up” by any random installer,  but MUST be gracefully applied to the walls by artisans and craftsmen who consider every detail.

It is owned by the former creative director of de Gournay and his wife.  They have taken historical motifs and updated them with brightness and wit, blending British classicism with London’s fashion scene. I love the chic and hip take on the classic looks and can see them appealing to the younger homeowner that love to mix new and old without looking frumpy.

Flat Weaves That Don’t Fall Flat

When The Rug Company opened up it’s Dallas showroom in 2011 I quickly became smitten with their gorgeous collection of heirloom quality rugs, especially the pieces by fabulous designers like Kelly Wearstler, Dian Von Furstenburg, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Alexander McQueen to name a few.  Prices point range from high dollar to super affordable and everything in between depending on the construction of the rug.

I thought it would be fun to get a little more insight on flat weave rugs from one of my local showroom reps here in Dallas! I  am often asked about flat weave rugs by most of my clients. They are everywhere now and with all of the gorgeous colors and graphic patterns, it’s hard not to take notice.  So I went directly to my showroom rep, Oscar for the real scoop on these fab little rugs and here is what he had to say….

Taking in the colorful showroom at The Rug Company designer brunch

Abbe-Is there anything important I should know about flat rugs before I plunge into the great unknown and purchase one?

Oscar-A flat weave is exactly what it is. A flat rug with not much cushion for the feet. It’s a different feel, a  more relaxed look.

Abbe - How are these rugs cleaned? Should I consider special cleaning or are they easy to spot clean?

Oscar – Depending on the material, they can be taken to a professional rug cleaner or can be washed at home if you have an industrial sized washer and hung to dry. Most are cotton, talk to your salesperson about the cleaning instructions. Not all rugs are created equal! If you are purchasing from a known retailer, check the cleaning instructions carefully.

Abbe-What kind of rug pad should I use? Can I make the rug feel more cushy under foot?Oscar -Many rugs pads are available. Different height for cushion, sticky ones that stick to your floor and rug to help with rug movement. Since they do not naturally provide lots of cushion, they are great options for dining rooms, bathrooms and entry spaces. If you don’t mind a rug without any pile, they look great in main family rooms too.

Abbe-Can I install a flat weave rug over carpet and then put furniture on top with out it puckering under the legs of the furniture?

Oscar – You can always be creative with this one… adding additional support for the furniture legs under the flat rug can even out the puckering.

Abbe -Is it a good plan to get a flat woven rug for spring through fall, and to switch to a regular thick wool (or shag) rug during the cold months?

Oscar- It really depends on what your needs are or if you just want a different look for the Fall.

Abbe -If my clients have kids, a husband, and a few puppy dogs. Would thick wool rugs be better for that busy family? I don’t want to buy anything that is delicate for them. I also don’t want to use an indoor/outdoor rug or one made from jute or sisal.

Oscar- I would suggest buying a rug that is well made and cleans up easily. A rug rich in lanolin would be best. The lanolin repeals water and dirt so the richer in the lanolin the easier to maintain the rug. A hand knotted rug can last for many generations.

For more affordable flat weave and hand knotted options…check out the entire Studio Collection! Jonathan Adler recently launched a fabulous collection of rugs here…and don’t forget the pillows! Or as they call them, cushions!
